Liturgical Signs: Mass, Prayers and Glossary - DVD Launch

DVD LaunchThe DVD 'Liturgical Signs: Mass, prayers and glossary' was launched on the 16th of December. We were very honoured to be blessed by the support of three bishops: Bishop Brain, diocese of Salford; Bishop Paul Hendricks, Chair of Bishops' Committee for the Pastoral Care of Deaf people, from diocese of Southwark; and Bishop John Rawsthorne, former Chair of Bishops' Committee for the Pastoral Care of Deaf people, from the diocese of Hallam.

DVD LaunchThe three bishops celebrated mass with the Deaf community at St Joseph's Mission to Deaf People. At the end of the Mass, Eileen Hosie, Chair of the Catholic Deaf Association, explained very briefly why the DVD will be important to many people. She was proud to give the DVDs to each of the bishops.

DVD LaunchThe new English-language translation of the Roman Missal came into effect in Advent 2011. However, as the Catholic Deaf community in the United Kingdom is a cultural and linguistic minority, the new translation of the Roman Missal is not accessible to them. The Catholic Deaf Association's UK Council appointed a committee to adapt parts of the Missal, specifically the Mass, for the signing Deaf community. Clergy, Pastoral Workers, Communicators, Interpreters and Volunteers will be able to use this DVD for training purposes. This DVD is part of the on-going process of enabling the Deaf community to experience real access to sacred liturgy. It is hoped this will give the signing Deaf community the means to participate in our liturgical celebrations thus enabling them to gain a more rightful place within the Church.
