The Opening of the New Deaf Centre, Cardiff

The new Centre was officially opened by Archbishop Smith on Thursday 27th September 2007. The new facilities provide the Service with an office, counselling area, storage cupboards toilets and a large meeting room with tea bar.

 

During the service in Church, Archbishop Smith, with Fr Tony Hodges and Sr Mary went into the Centre. Archbishop Smith said a special prayer and blessed the new Centre. Everything was filmed live, it was relayed and projected onto a huge screen in Church so that everybody was able to follow what was happening. More

baby Jesus’ hand was off but Sr Agnes said she would repair and clean it.

When the statue was cleaned and mended and painted, it was almost perfect apart from one of baby Jesus hands which had 2 fingers missing. Sr Dorothy brought Margaret to have a look at it to see what she thought. Margaret thought the statue was beautiful and it would be alright with the 2 fingers missing.

The statue was taken to the chapel at Queen’s Drive and at the next Sunday Mass one of the first Deaf people who came in - looked at the statue and immediately saw the hand and Signed ‘I love you’

They were all so delighted that baby Jesus is no longer disabled but he is telling Deaf people ‘I love you’. It has turned out to be the perfect statue for their Chapel.

Margaret Fawcett is Chair person of the Advisory Group for our work with Deaf people in Liverpool Archdiocese. At the July meeting she asked if we could have a statue of Our Lady in the chapel at Queen’s Drive.

Sr Dorothy found a statue of Our Lady and Baby Jesus in the Convent cellar. The statue was very dusty and chipped and
